CAMBRIDGE — Today at American Legion Post 91 on U.S. 50 from 7 p.m. until, there will be a dance with all proceeds to benefit the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Miss. and the YMCA in Louisiana, with the National YMCA providing matching funds for all money raised locally. The event is being held to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.
There will also be a silent auction with the auctioned items provided by local merchants, and food and drink will be sold. Tickets will be sold at the door for a minimum donation of $10 per ticket for the evening’s festivities.
The band will be composed of former members of a group that played in the area in the 1960s and 70s known as The Gremlins and later E.S. Grit. These were popular, local bands that played the Shore extensively and had a large following in the Dorchester/Wicomico/Talbot region while entertaining at the Legion, the Armory and becoming the house band at a spot called The Carousel on Md. 16.
The members had not played together for more than 30 years, and reunited for their 40th class reunion in July, then decided to do one more performance after the hurricane disaster in the Gulf area to raise money for the victims.
Class of 1965 and former band members Ricky Cannon, Doug Turner, Steve Tyler and Greg White will reunite again to recreate what many shared back then when they danced to the Gremlins/Grit sounds.
Also performing with the band and for some solo songs will be another local musician and class of 1965 member, Mike Baker and his organ/solo selections that he has been entertaining with for years.
A statement from the group said, “So, if you would like to harken back to the glory days and the years of your youth, or if you just like to hear tunes from the Beach Boys, Creedance Clearwater Revival and The Kingsmen, then drive over and join us and support a good cause.”
“Return to another era, an era when troubles were forgotten on Saturdays by dancing the night away with friends,” the band’s statement said. “You will be glad you did.”
